So, kinda curious why Tom isn't gonna just shatter them all rather than taking them prisoner like we know actually happens in the show. I mean, either one was listed as a win condition, and why would he take the chance? I suppose he might just be super arrogant and want to demonstrate his superiority. Hm.

Why kill them when you can bend them until they break?
I have two guesses:
1 - She can't "shatter" Steven because if Steven's hitpoints hit zero he simply dies. Therefore the only way for Tom to win is to capture and deliver.
2 - Jasper has some kind of Honor Code that prevents her from shattering them once they surrender, which is what Marceline/Bonnie will probably do since Tom just one-shot their munchkin.

Arguably, a lot of following scenes might also be explanation about the die trick and its creator, with narrative motions being done in the background. Something which has been done before in the comic to progress past narrative elements.
Or, Diplomancer skills and weird rolls. If the person is such a rules lawyer, than getting talked a bunch can't be resisted effectively IC. Sure, it can command, but that doesn't mean it has a good resistance to pure creative monologue.
Though, if the rules suddenly favor a homeworld gem and it's equipment that our players weren't privvy to, perhaps Jasper will be knocked about by some custom rules they agreed to before they joined the game. I.E. She might view Steven as a "fusion", not realizing it's a hybrid. I mean, I kind of see this as a PVP game. So, giving Jasper a full readout of her enemies skills and item lists without the players getting the same treatment is rather favoring one side. But, eh, just a number of thoughts.

Also, keep in mind Jasper is kinda forcing Lapis to go along with this, at this point. If Tom fails a roll, things may go south for him.
There’s also option 3. He is bored and giving them this futile chance to stop him by doing this to amuse himself.
Or option 4. He really can’t just shatter a kid.
Option 5. It’s not really Tom but Micah wearing a Tom disguise.

@Rastaba I love how all of those sound like equally valid plot twists XD
You thought it was Tom, but it was really me, Dio! Errr, I mean Micah! :P

Let's not forget "all win conditions become unavailable, the contest is thrown out"!
